Love Data Week

Love Data Week
runs February 10 – 14, 2020! This year we’re celebrating by showing some love for some of our favorite data-related resources in and around the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Let us know about some of the resources you love – or would love to see – by reaching out to us on Twitter @UWMadRschSvcs or via our
contact form.

❤️ Data Management Plans

For data management plans, we love sharing our How to Create a DMP page! It takes researchers through all of the important elements of creating a data management plan as well as how to use DMPTool. DMPTool is another resource close to our hearts! It helps researchers create data management plans using templates for major funding agencies. Our favorite part, though, is that if you sign in with your UW-Madison NetID, you can request feedback on the first draft of your DMP from our RDS consultants! We’d love to hear from you!

❤️ ResearchDrive

If you are looking for a secure storage option for your research data, we’re excited about ResearchDrive, which is a campus-wide file storage service managed by the Division of Information Technology. ResearchDrive, which is for Faculty PIs, permanent PIs, and their research group members, is suited for a variety of research purposes, including backup, archive, storage for data inputs/outputs of research computing, and others. It is a secure place for keeping data that includes off-site backups, encryption, and monitoring by the University of Wisconsin Cybersecurity Operations Center. Additional security restrictions are required to store restricted data.

❤️ City of Madison Open Data

We love data and so it should come as no surprise that we love open data portals! One of our current favorites is the City of Madison’s Open Data Portal. This portal is a treasure trove of datasets, including information on local boundaries, facilities and infrastructure, government reports, health and public safety, neighborhoods, ongoing projects and plans, sustainability, and transportation. It also has great visualization tools to help you make sense of the data!

❤️ MINDS@UW

Our open access repository, MINDS@UW, is near and dear to our hearts. It is designed to gather, share, and preserve digital materials related to the University of Wisconsin’s research and instructional mission. It contains a variety of research outputs, including research papers and reports, pre-prints and post-prints, datasets, and conference papers and presentations, among others, and gets visitors from around the world. If you have questions about MINDS@UW, feel free to reach out to us!

❤️ Data Classification

UW-Madison’s Office of Data Management and Analytics Services has a really helpful resource to understand how UW-Madison classifies data. At UW-Madison, data is classified as Public, Internal, Sensitive, or Restricted. Knowing the differences can help you make sure you are handling data according to the required privacy and security protocols for each type. We also recommend you check out the full data classification policy
